A while back I had the opportunity to photograph some of 25thapril's latest acquisitions. I have just recently got around to having a Japanese member of Gunboards who is also a keen collector of Japanese Militaria and ordnance give me a bit of insight into the meaning of the characters on the items. As it is quite interesting I thought that I would share it with you all here.
The first two photos are of a Senninbari (1000 Stich Belt). The characters read Bu-un Cho-kyu (武運長久) meaning Everlasting Battle Fortunes.
The third photo is of a Cotton Hand Towel. These were normally purchased or given by their respective home prefectures. This towel has the same slogan as the Senninbari except that it has a printed copy of handwriting on the left hand side stating the writer's name Ito Toichiro and his age of 110 years .
He was considered a novelty back then due to him being the oldest known Japanese alive and his handwriting of the slogan must have meant some extra punch to the slogan meaning.
It turns out that back in 1940 when he was supposed to have been 113 years old, they rechecked his birth registry and found out that the original birth date entry was an error and he was actually just 88 years old at that time. So much for the extra punch!
The forth and fifth photos are of a Houko Bokuro (Service Bag). The owner's name on the Personal Effects bag is Teramura Takeo (寺村 武夫).
On the reverse side reads a list of what the soldier should keep inside;
1. Military Dairy or Notebook
2. Qualification Certificates
3. Draft Notification Slip
4. Passbook (Bank Book)
