24 cm SK L/40

Hello everyone,

I have have interest in buying a german 24cm SK L/40 case. But it is marked with the Kaiserliche Marine (M crown) and dated XII 1914. Not like most later ones that were made for the railwaycannons and did not have the kaiserliche marine stamp. This one was made to be fired by a ship. It was only in 1915-16 that the ships were salvaged and the guns were placed on the coast and front. So this case dated from before that.

Does this affect value? is it worth less because is is not made for the famous railway cannons? the shell is made by Karlsruhe.
What would be a correct price fore this shell?, The shell is in very good condition and i see that it still has its primer.

I would very much appreciate your opinion

JohnR,

The value is more about the state of the case. I prefer to have the navy cases p.e, but other collecters will prefer the army marked ones.
Value? between 350 and 450 depending the state. If the haube is with the case, the value wil go up. And even when the guns were placed on the cost, they used up the navy marked shells. The stamp says only who ordered the cases, but they were used by both the navy and the army.

A haube is a brass cap placed on the cartridge top prevent access to the gunpowder. Mostly gone, i believe it was removed before firing.

The last months these cases seems to be on th emarket in Belgium. I picked 5 of them up in about 4 months, and it isn't over.

I see, I have never seen this haube. I can believe that is is a very unique extra. So the condition of the case...bad as in black/oxidized and good as in shiny and no dents?
Do you think these will ever drop in value? or is it a good ''investment''. Not that I would ever ever sell it, but it does feel better :p

John,
Bad is with dents or red brass. I think there value will stick arround it.
A few years ago they went for 5-600 euro, but for some reason these dropped in price, as like the WW1 17 cm cases.

The 3th from the left is a 24 cm case with a haube.

One Naval case marked 1901
One Naval case marked 1914
One Naval case marked 1916
One Naval case marked 1910
one army case marked june 1918
one Dutch case, german reused in WW2, marked 1906

Still looking for early years, 1890-1900, 1915 and 1917. Just like coins, collect by year.
And looking for a shell for one, just one.

very nice collection.....I'll post a picture of mine when he get's here.
I have a very large shell here...I had him for a long time already. My grandfather found it on the field many years ago. it weighs 95 kg and it's diameter is +-24 cm.
I'm hoping it is for the 24 cm SK L/40 but I can't find it. Also the shell is broken of on the ring were the drivingband should have been I think.
So there is no bottom.
I don't have a lot of picture's of it know, but I'll take some later. meanwhile this is what I have. I think it is about +70cm long or so. Any ideas?

Hi

Certainly a WW1 German Heavy Minenwerfer shell short model (about 245 mm)

----

Thank you very much, it seems indeed likely. Does the piece has any value in this condition?

regards.

John,

They are now and then for sale on auctions like delcampe, there they go in a complete state, with drivingbands for about 250-300 euro. Right now there is one for sale for 400, and it doen't move. For your shell, no idea.

@ TheKees: Thanks I will look it up.
@ kz11gr : The driving band is absent, the bottom of the shell is missing and I thing it cracked of where the drivingband originaly was.

May be it was a toxic MW shell .
