I dont want to repeat another post again that may already be on the forum but i have looked before i posted. I have just got my self one of the thousand 2 pounder rounds that were found as ballast weights with missing drive band that will eventually have a drive band swaged on in the near future, Its marked up as HV dated 1944 IV/N T&S, flat head screws off, look Naval to me, What type case does it it fit to and where will i find more info in the round and what markings and colours should it be.

I'm sure there are posts on these projectiles and the other various types of 2pr HV practice. From memory the HV is for the 158mm navy case and is HV to differentiate them from earlier gun mks usage. There are about 4 or 5 different types of proj. depending on cap threads, tracer and cap shape.

I bought dozens of these a few years ago and they had most of their original paint: - black with a thin yellow band just on or below the nose cap a large white "N" stencilled on the body and some small white stencilling which hasn't been legible. They fit in standard Naval 2pr cases; as well as the short sub-calibre cases. Couple of pics attached:

Nice to see one of these in its original colours and markings. Just the information i was looking for. I take it the WW1 and WW2 dated 158mm long cases are identical.

This is mine that was re banded a while ago,
cheers
Andy

Are there different shapes for this practice shell ?
I can see a head screwed (plug) on Andy's shell and one piece body for the shell of Depotman.
As I understand 3 constructions :
-one piece body
-large head screwed (Mk VI N ?)
-body of HE with inert plug rep. fuze. (Mk I T/N ?)

My picture and all the same size heads from the ballast box were NOT one-piece; they all had a separate steel nose plug (very difficult to remove!). I'll post more pics of HE practice heads from the same ballast box that have the same nose thread as a fuze (some had a brass nose plug), pitch filled, and a tracer threaded hole in the rear. I also picked up a black plastic/hard rubber plug for the tracer hole. Depotman

Is this type of practice shell the only one used with the short sub-cal case? Were none used with the time fuzes?

A good question Tony, i have only ever seen the plugged type mounted in the 2pr sub cal cases but would also welcome some more info on the subject,

Pictured is the sub-calibre round I have in my collection which came with a flat head projectile. From my reading of the headstamp the case was originally a full sized Mk1 case made in 1916. I think it was converted to sub-calibre in 1923, glad to have your thoughts. The projectile is stamped 2lb, VSM37820.G, 2Pr II/N RL, L7 8-36, FS. Lots of information on a small projectile!

there are the true cone caps and also an ogived capped types ie with curved sides to a shorter cap with a larger thread dia than the true cones and is a bigger thread than the practice projectiles that have the No.131 fuze thread (but do not take a 131 because the body is too narrow below the thread. I am certain a lot of this was is in previous threads including stuff on sub cal.

Mine needs re-banding how did you go about it.

I used a piece of lighting conductor copper, then heated it up to soften it a bit, hammed it round, and a friend of mine turned it in his lathe and you can't even see the join.
cheers
