Picked this up today, collected ww1 for 30 years and never found one ! Odd that it was or was intended to be shipped the the U.S.
Any thoughts on this?

Any cleaning suggestions, perhaps only a wipe with a damp cloth. Still has the metal liner.

Are these as rare over there ?

Comparison

Some comparison images, there is a difference in how the two are joined, the 1917 box with true dovetails only show on the side, 1942 they show all round. The tin liner opens with it appears two tear off pieces, so the over all opening is the same.

nobody has a similar ww1 box over there ?
