I have acquired an 18 PR case to go with my Shrapnel shell. Quite a bit stumped as regards to the markings so wondered if anyone could help please. .
I'll start with the case...

18 Pr 18 Pounder.
Small "T"
II Mk 2.
1917 Date
27 4 17- date of manufacture?
S in 2 concetric C one inside the other. ???
DAG ??? (quite small)
K U F ???
C F F (broadarrow) Cordite filled twice?

PRIMER

1917
Large 1
B
B T-H within a circle.
Broad Arrow
12/17
L over something else but weakly struck.

really hope someone can help, thankyou.

Without a photo makes identifying the marks a little difficult.

24 7 17 - Date of case manufacture
CCS - Canadian Cartridge Company
KUF - If this appears just below the makers's monogram it is an as yet unidentified character string. The string is normally only found on Canadian cases and is incremental.
CFF - Case life history - two full charges of Cordite or similar.

Primer
B T-H - British Thomson-Houston of Rugby - one of the greats of 20th century British engineering
1917 - date of manufacture
12/17 - date of filling

Could be DAC? The C has a small arrow within makes it look like a G or sometimes Q? Probably Domminion Arsenal, Quebec, Canada.

Hello, thanks Tim and Shaky much appreciated.
The K U F is indeed stamped bellow the CCS monogram as Stated by Tim, and the "DAG" mark is slightly to the left of that and is quite small. the D is quite tall followed by AG.
I have took photos but not came out very well due to previous owner having polished this case. ive stood it wrapped in a damp cloth to tarnish it up a bit. (ive done this before to my 13 PR case and it worked quite well, took about 2 weeks.

Not sure if Ive seen an example of this monogram yet. The damp cloth idea sounds good though. I will have to try this for myself on my 15cm s.f.h. case.

Before you do this, first rub it over with WD-40 on a cloth. After the WD-40, wipe the case clean with a dry cloth and then rub it over with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits to remove any reamining traces of WD-40. This removes the film that can be left on the surface by some polishes, and exposes the metal directly to the air.

Thanks Falcon. I have not sdone this before, this prob explains that the tarnish im looking for is a tad patchy in places. Im experimenting now with some real shiny 50 cal cases ive got as to the best methods.

Rubbing the case over with a BRASS (definitely NOT steel) wire brush can also help remove the greenish-white residue of old polish.

However it must be done carefully, as brass brushes can still mark some cases.
