12.7 x 108 slap

Just arrived from SLICS, 12.7 x 108 SLAP.

Supposedly made by Winchester for the CIA.

Sent to Agghanistan for the Taliban to use against the Russian Hind helicopters.

Picture is not clear but the headstamp is only a date, 88. And to my untrained eye looks very much look like a Winchester date.Edmonton-20120606-00020.jpgEdmonton-20120606-00027.jpg

Correct, there were 4 versions of these. There were two different shapes and these came with black or white sabots.

Very interesting. Does it use the standard .50 SLAP projectile or was a new one developed? Any details of projectile weight (with or without sabot) and muzzle velocity?

There is also a 12.7x 108 SLAP round loaded with a similar projectile on black lacquered Chinese cases. These were obviously much more use to the Mujhadin than .50 Browning as they had far more Russian MGs.

I understand these were specifically required to defeat the armour on Hind gunships and I believe these were loaded by IVI in Canada for the gentlemen from Virginia.

Also interesting. The Chinese produce their own 12.7mm APDS round, the Type 54-1, which looks different from the SLAP in that the plastic sabot fully encloses the penetrator. The penetrator weighs around 22.5g and has an MV of 1,150 m/s.
