105 mm Squashead

Hello All,

We have found this projectile and I'm pretty sure it's a 105 mm Squashead DM138 German or M393A1 American,
this because the have the same bottom part.

Length: 430 mm Aprox (did not take the measurements myself)
Diameter: 105 mm
Driving bands: 20 mm

The strange part is that in the German and American description of this projectile they say that the body is steel and the bottom part aluminium.
In this round it's just he other way around.

Can anyone help.

Regards,

Chris

Chris,
for the US piece I think there are two separate rounds, the HEP round and the TP version of the HEP round. Check see if you can find a description for the TP version. Likewise the US 105mm HEAT (tank type) has different materials for the TP vs the HEAT, though they look nearly identical.

The round shown is marked M408. There is also a very similar WP round, I think it is an M416.

Hi Chris,
I think your problem is a vocabulary problem !
Effectively, the body is steel but the TOP part is aluminum and not the bottom part.

Yoda,

As I said the problem is that the top is aluminium and not the top.

Chris,

As US-Subs has stated, it appears to be the target practice version of the HEP-T/HESH projectile. The U.S. versions have a screw-in aluminum nose like yours, but the lower body is all one piece with a screw-in tracer, as is visible on the projectile that US-Subs shows. The U.S. round is M467. I'm thinking your copy is produced outside the U.S. as you have stated.
